Having a soft blanket or teddy bear in a baby's crib is cute to look at, but it can be deadly. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) remains a mystery, but doctors and nurses agree having items in your baby's crib is dangerous. Baptist Hospital is the first in Nashville to promote safe sleep by teaching parents how to use a sleep sack. A sleep sack is a wearable blanket made of organic cotton. Jill Bennett, a childbirth educator at Baptist, says the sleep sack keeps babies from suffocating. Bennett wants blankets *gone* from cribs, but know by the questions she gets in class that old habits are hard to break. She gets questions like "should I still swaddle with one blanket?" or "is it okay to have a loose blanket and tucking it certain ways?" Bennett says she always responds by saying no, no blanket whatsoever. In 2010, more than 130 infants in Tennessee died because they weren't put to sleep safely. Bennett believes educating parents is the first step in reducing the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. "I think SIDS is always something people always want to talk about with the classes, I think it's always a fear in any parents mind" says Bennett.Sarah and Jeff Moats are new parents. They say the sleep sack has been wonderful for their new bundle of joy, Ella Grace. "It's wonderful because it just swallows her up and soothes her so well and it helps her really stay asleep" says Sarah Moats. She says having Ella Grace in a sleep sack gives her peace of mind.
